Case Studies

  • Chiltern Path Maintenance Volunteers

The South Chilterns Path Maintenance Volunteers (SCPMVs) is a well-supported volunteer group which improves local rights of way across the South Chilterns.  TOE2 has supported several of their excellent projects, which offer good value for money and make real improvements to countryside access across the area.

  • Footbridge for Cuttlebrook Nature reserve (£5,000)

Thame’s Cuttlebrook Nature Reserve provides a valuable green space in the town, somewhere for local people to enjoy and wildlife to thrive.  TOE2 funds supported a sturdy new footbridge which is accessible to all and improves links with local rights of way.  The bridge was designed and built by local volunteers, with grant funding used to purchase materials.

  • Bloxham Circular walk

Enhancing a new circular walk around Bloxham by improving access to the local countryside and creating safe, easily accessible paths.  There are options for a longer and a shorter waymarked route, with attractive views of the village and its rural setting.  TOE2 supported new gates and steps and improved drainage.  The walk is now enjoyed by many local people, including the local health walk group. TOE2 is looking to fund more circular routes around Oxfordshire’s villages.

We believe that everyone, including the elderly and those with reduced mobility, should be able to enjoy accessing and exploring Oxfordshire’s countryside and green spaces for recreation and enjoyment, with all the health and well-being benefits this brings.

TOE2 supports projects which improve access to local sites as well as the wider countryside and strategic routes, and projects that fit within Oxfordshire County Council’s Rights of Way Management Plan (RoWMP) 2015-2025.

The OCC Countryside Access Team is always happy to offer support and advice to local communities wishing to make their area easier and safer to explore on foot, by bicycle and on horseback.

TOE2 will support projects which improve the accessibility and quality of the rights of way network, including:

1. Creating new links, circular routes and traffic-free routes

2. Replacing stiles with gates

3. Improving path surfaces

4. Improving signs and route-marking

5. Promoting the wider use of the countryside and green spaces, and linking with local facilities.
